Junior Dawson Smith plays his guitar. Smith has been a guitarist for seven years.

“One of my favorite quotes about music is by Dave Grohl, ‘That’s the greatest thing about music. You can sing a song to 85,000 people, and they’ll all sing it back for 85,000 reasons,’” junior Anna Darty said. “That’s why music means so much to me.”

Music is meant to evoke emotion, and therefore music means something different to everyone. Whether you just listen to enjoy it or whether you perform it, music holds a special place in everyone’s heart. It is personal for everyone and touches something inside people, which not many things can do.

Different types of music can make you feel differently. Some people listen to certain music when they feel sad or happy, and for many people, music is their escape.

“It makes me feel relaxed,” junior Sydney Brown said.

For others, music makes them want to dance or elevates their mood. That is the whole purpose of music, and the whole reason that music continues to connect with people and continues to still be relevant. It has meaning and that meaning is different for each individual. For many of us, it’s not too difficult to connect with music.

Junior Dawson Smith is a member of the St. George’s modern music ensemble and has been playing guitar for seven years. Playing and performing gives him a deeper connection with music, one that not many people have.

“It’s a way to express myself, a way only I know how to,” Smith said. “I can connect, I can play what I want and I can express what I want, even if I don’t know how to say it or to express it in another way.”

Most of us do not have this connection with music. Although we enjoy music and appreciate it, we do not understand it in this way. Sophomore Ragan Middleton is a member of the choir, but outside of school, she is in the band Say Something, which has been quite successful.

“The most rewarding thing with music is when my band can just sit in a room and jam together, not many people can experience something like this,” Middleton said.

Music allows us to express ourselves in ways not possible before, and performing gives us the ability to share our gifts with others.

A song has the ability to transport to you to the place where you first heard it, or bring back a certain memory. They’re like time capsules. Music also has the ability to relate, which can help us in difficult moments of our life.

“Everyone listens to music and I think music is an escape for a lot of people,” senior Peyton Smith said. “I think people are able connect with music a lot.”

This is what it’s all about. No matter what we are going through, there is always a song out there to tell us that we’re not alone.

Music means the world to people because of the singular factor that it is always there, for every situation and every mood.

“Music makes me feel free. Music is my solution for everything,” Peyton Smith said. “It’s a huge part of my life and I think it always will be.”
