The Gryphons huddle together before taking the court. Currently, the Gryphons have a record of 25-4.

Last week, the St. George’s boys’ basketball team beat Harding Academy 58-47 on Harding’s home court to win the Region Championship.

“We have come together as a team, which really showed in the regional tournament and is a large reason for why we won the regional championship,” senior Justin Wertner said. Wertner, a Mr. Basketball Finalist, was named to the all-tournament team.

Senior Connor Green also made the all-tournament team, and sophomore Chase Hayden was named the tournament MVP, or most valuable player.

St. George’s has not won a boys’ basketball state tournament since 2010, but this year’s Gryphons team, with a current record of 25-4, is looking to earn another state title.

“We have the right tools and the right guys to win state,” Wertner said. “The way we have come together and care for each other, like a brotherhood, allows for us to be so successful and will hopefully lead us to a state championship!”

The Gryphons will play Franklin Road Academy in a sub-state game at St. George’s at 7:00pm. The Gryphons must win this game to advance to the state semi-finals, and all supporters will be expected to pay admission.
