Best Hot Chocolate You Can Find In Stores

Media Editor Callie Hollis rates the hot chocolates she can find in her local grocery stores worst to best.

Private Selection White Chocolate Hot Chocolate: -1000/10

I know what you’re thinking. Yes, this smells as BAD as it looks. It tastes just awful. I’m not going to lie, this made me almost throw up. Imagine: I take a sip and I immediately sprint to my fridge to find something to help drown out the gross taste. As one can tell, this was not a fun experience in the slightest. I could not get rid of the after taste for the rest of the day. I rated this hot chocolate a -1000 out of ten because no one should have to endure what I did.

Swiss Miss with Mini Marshmallows Hot Chocolate: 2/10

Mini marshmallows in Swiss Miss are a true curse. They are most likely either too hard or dissolve right into your hot chocolate. Also, it does not have the chocolatey flavor that you would expect it to have. In that area, it definitely falls flat. You have to stir up the powder a lot or else you get these little chunks of undissolved hot chocolate. Bleh. In short, I was not able to finish my mug of swiss miss. My advice: get better mini marshmallows and another type of hot chocolate.

Swiss Miss Reduced-Calorie Hot Chocolate: 5/10

The reduced-calorie version of Swiss Miss hot chocolate has surprisingly better flavor than regular Swiss Miss. It’s not the best, but it’s still not the worst. At least it didn’t come with the weird mini marshmallows in it. Another sort-of plus is that it came with larger-sized hot chocolate packs which made my mug fill up thirty-three percent more this time. I would settle for this if it was cold outside and this was all I had in my pantry.

Nestlé Classic Rich Milk Chocolate Hot Chocolate: 8/10

This is just right. It has the right balance of richness and chocolate. Unlike the others so far, Nestlé tastes like the hot chocolate that would be served on the Polar Express. There are better types of cocoa out there, but they are expensive and I do not have the funds to buy them. However, I know that I can afford this and will drink Nestle Classic Rich Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa on a future cold winter’s night. So, I rate this an 8/10.

Ghirardelli Peppermint Hot Chocolate: 9/10

Ghirardelli smells so good right off the bat; it smells like one of their peppermint chocolate squares you would buy in a pack. And it tastes like one too. I do, however, have a little P.S.A.: don’t overdo with the water because it does dilute easily. Other than that, this was a great experience. It didn’t clump up and tasted like a wonderful peppermint had just melted in my already amazing hot chocolate. I give this a 9/10.
