“Anything Goes” for the middle school musical

Middle school students break out their dancing shoes for upcoming musical

The middle school musical is finally on its way to the big stage. If you enjoy the occasional rom com, then this is the musical for you. “Anything Goes” will be on stage from Nov. 16 to 18. The musical tells the story of a complicated love triangle between a wealthy lord, a beautiful heiress and charming but poor trickster while they are together on a cruise.

Although the cast list just came out, the middle school students have already started learning the dances and songs for the upcoming musical. While some are nervous about the play, they are also excited for the chance to play another character.

“Usually, when I’m about to go on stage, I’m very excited about sharing my knowledge of my character to the audience,” seventh-grade student Bella Taylor said. “Sometimes, I do feel nervous because everybody does.”

While some students are nervous about the musical, others, like sixth-grader Roselyn Higareda, are involved in musicals to gain confidence in themselves.

“I’ve always had a passion for musicals,” Higareda said, “and I just want to be more confident in myself.”

Unlike Higareda, a few students in the cast had never auditioned for a musical before this one, but they decided that they wanted to try something new. Sixth-grade student Lev Hills is one student who chose to step outside of his comfort zone.

“I originally did not want to do it,” Hills said, “but my friends just said I should do it since I have a good voice.”

After the cast list was released for the musical, the first read-through went smoothly, and the middle schoolers seemed excited to start the rehearsals for the play. Sixth grader Payton Carstensen is just happy to be a part of the musical.

“I’m looking forward to being the background singers and dancers because I’m in most of the scenes,” Carstensen said. “It wasn’t the part that I wanted, but I was still excited about getting my part because it was an interesting part that I could play.”

The musical will feature lots of singing and dancing, which the middle school students are also excited for.

“I’m really excited because there’s gonna be a lot of fun in production numbers,” eighth-grade student Gianna Scola said. “There’s gonna be a lot of dancing in it, which I’m excited for since I’m a dancer.”
