Five Questions With JR Upton
1. What do you like about being a male cheerleader?
“I like cheering for the boys and seeing them win. I also like being able to stand out and making a name for myself.”
2. Have you received any backlash for being a male cheerleader? How do you feel being both a male cheerleader and a football player?
“Yes, I’ve had a few friends make fun of me and use derogatory terms [towards me]. But I don’t let them faze me. I do what I do, and I enjoy it. I feel like it makes me a very versatile person, and very diverse.”
3. What is your favorite part about cheer?
“My favorite part is doing the handshakes with the varsity boys players, like the pre-game rituals and stuff like that. It’s pretty fun.”
4. How is it being around all girls all the time?
“It’s lovely. The girls enjoy cheering with me, and I enjoy cheering with them. I like to get to know them. It’s pretty cool.”
5. What’s one thing you’ve learned from cheer that you feel could help you in life?
“I’ve learned that you shouldn’t be afraid to be yourself no matter what you’re doing, and no matter who’s seeing you. Just do what you enjoy doing no matter who’s around.”

Taking the leap and becoming a male cheerleader when there are very little is incredible. Full credit to you stepping out of society’s box! Keep it up
