Mr. Luther Mercer hugs and says goodbye to his Citizenship students. Today was his last day at the Collierville Campus.

This morning, Mr. Luther Mercer announced that he would be leaving St. George’s. Currently, Mr. Mercer is the Director of the Institute for Citizenship and for the past four years that the Institute has been around, he has been a primary force for community development and student civic activism.

“This is my seventh year [at St. George’s] and it’s been a blessing,” said Mr. Mercer. “I’ve gotten the chance to know and spend time with a lot you.”

His sudden resignation is due to his acceptance of a job at New Leaders, a national nonprofit organization that develops school leaders and designs leadership policies and practices for school systems across the country.

“I wanted to be able to say goodbye and to say thank you because you have meant so much to me,” said Mr. Mercer in his address.

He will still remain in Memphis, as the New Leaders office he is working is located here in the city, but today is his last official day in the St. George’s community.

“I look forward to hearing about your success and I’m going to come back and visit when I get the opportunity, but I wanted you to know that I love you.”
