Collierville coffee is for you and me

Junior Chloe Booth stands in front of the Ugly Mug café on Poplar Avenue. Booth and junior Katie Boyle went coffee tasting in Memphis.

As avid coffee drinkers, we have become, for the first time in our lives, coffee-d out. After drinking six cups of coffee within six hours, we became jittery, bloated and spiteful towards our life source. When in doubt, stick to coffee places in Collierville, because we drove 30 minutes away to drink some gross drinks. Also, for health reasons, we recommend one cup of coffee per day, not six.

We rated each drink on taste and rated the locations on price, service and “cuteness.” We also listed their best-selling drink as well as their best non-coffee beverage. We rated flavor on a scale of one to five, one being dirt and five being heavenly. In accordance to price, the more dollars signs equates to how expensive the drinks were. We rated the service on how well the servers treated us, with one being terrible and five being excellent. Ambiance ratings were based on the decor and uniqueness of the café, as well as being a good study space.

Starbucks – 3603 S Houston Levee Rd, Collierville, TN 38017
Taste:
Chloe: Caramel macchiato – 3 out of 5. They made me a latte instead of a macchiato, and it didn’t have a strong caramel flavor.
Katie: Mocha frappuccino – 4 out of 5. It was so chocolate-y that I couldn’t really taste the coffee.
Price: $$$
Service: 5 out of 5. The server knew Chloe’s order by heart and the workers were our age, so it felt more personal.
Ambiance: 2 out of 5. Starbucks tends to be very standard from location to location. Nothing made this particular location unique. Starbucks has more of a “get your coffee and go” feel to it because of the small size and rushed environment.
Best-selling drink: Café mocha
Best alternative drink: Hot chocolate
Comments: They have easily-accessible wifi.

Square Beans – 103 N Center St, Collierville, TN 38017

Taste:
Chloe: Caramel macchiato – 5 out of 5. The macchiato was literally heaven in a tacky, green mug.
Katie: Mocha espresso – 4 out of 5. It was perfectly chocolatey and tasted great at the beginning, but there was a ton of syrup left at the bottom.
Price: $$$. It was expensive, but worth it.
Service: 5 out of 5. The servers were so nice and gave Chloe new change when she dropped it in crack of the counter.
Ambiance: 5 out of 5. Instead of to-go cups that most cafés serve their coffee in, they presented us with coffee in cute green mugs. This is a great place to sit and drink your coffee and they had really comfy chairs.
Best selling drink: Honeysuckle cappuccino
Best alternative drink: Peanut butter hot chocolate
Comments: What really matters is that they have wifi and ice cream.

Ugly Mug Café – 4610 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38111

Taste:
Chloe: Caramel macchiato – 4 out of 5. It tastes weird at first, but it gets better as you finish. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s definitely worth a try.
Katie: Ugly mocca – 3 out of 5. It’s super sweet, bitter and tastes ugly, which I guess
was the point. Definitely a drink that has an acquired taste.
Price: $$$$
Service: 4 out of 5. They were nice, but they didn’t care about small talk or niceties.
Ambiance: 4 out of 5. It was very small but cute. They also had shelves with tons of “ugly” mugs on them, including two from Starbucks.
Best selling drink: Full moon latte
Best alternative drink: Strawberry banana smoothie
Comments: They have a drive-thru and free wifi, but we were too scared to ask for the password.

Café Eclectic – 510 S Highland St, Memphis, TN 38111
Taste:
Chloe: Caramel sutra, or their version of a caramel macchiato – 3 out of 5. It was very milk-heavy and bland, and it felt like something was missing. For the first time in my life, I couldn’t finish my coffee.
Katie: White mocha – 3 out of 5. It wasn’t anything special and was very bland.
Price: $$ – It was a good place to get cheap coffee.
Service: 5 out of 5. The host had a full conversation with us and was very attractive.
Ambiance: 3 out of 5. They had a good color scheme of dark blue and purple. On one of their walls, they have listed 10 things you didn’t know about coffee, which was interesting to read. This location was also spacious and had large tables for studying. Above the café was an apartment complex for college students, making it a student-feeding ground.
Best selling drink: Star and Micey
Best alternative drink: London Fog (earl green tea)
Comments: The coffee bean they use, Illy, is very well-known and high quality. They also have full meals available for purchase. A few weeks back, we visited their other location in midtown, but it wasn’t as nice. The midtown location was out of a lot of their dishes that were on the menu, and our waitress wasn’t as warm and kind as the server at the Highland location. The address for the other location is 603 N McLean Blvd, Memphis, TN, 38107.

Sweet Noshings in Overton Square – 2113 Madison Ave, Memphis, TN 38104
Taste:
Chloe: Caramel latte, because they didn’t have a macchiato – 1 out of 5. I have personally never drank dirt, but I know this is what it tastes like.
Katie: Mocha – 1 out of 5. This doesn’t deserve a rating. This was gross. They shouldn’t be allowed to sell coffee.
Price: $$$
Service: 3 out of 5. They were nice, but since it was busy, it wasn’t as personal as other cafés. Also, screaming children on sugar highs doesn’t create a cozy environment.
Ambiance: 5 out of 5 for children. 2 out of 5 for everyone else. It’s more of a candy store than a café, which makes it heaven for kids and hell for all other age groups.
Best selling drink: White mocha
Best alternative drink: Chai tea
Comments: Honestly, their best-selling drink is probably bottled water. We took two sips of our coffee, looked at each other, got up, left the café, found the nearest trash can and laughed at the loud, clunking noises our drinks made as they hit the bottom of the trash can.

Dunkin Donuts – 1540 Union Ave, Memphis, TN 38104
Taste:
Chloe: Caramel macchiato – 4 out of 5. It was your typical caramel macchiato.
Katie: Mocha – 3 out of 5. It was very bitter.
Price: $ – They offer reasonably good coffee at a fair price.
Service: 5 out of 5. They had a full conversation with us and personalized the experience for us. Although they messed up our order, they had good intentions and even gave us a larger drink than we payed for.
Best selling drink: Macchiato
Best alternative drink: Sweet tea, because this is the south
Comments: Make sure you go to the right location. Not all macchiatos are created equal.
