Gryphons reminded of inclement weather policy
With the upcoming winter expected to have record low temperatures, St. George’s inclement weather policy may be applied more often through the academic year.
Unlike other schools, St. George’s does not follow traditional closures based on the decisions of Shelby County schools.
Instead, St. George’s takes into account a holistic review based on dangerous driving conditions, amount of snowfall, and other inclement weather conflicts such as tornadic weather.
“The fundamental premise of the policy is that it balances our variety of commitment to students’ safety,” Mr. Tom Morris said, Director of Upper School.
Mr. Morris made it clear that the ultimate decision is made by Mr. Bill Taylor, the Headmaster of the school.
“We try to make the decision in sufficient time to get the news out and email students and parents so that they are not on the road, ” Mr. Morris said. “We typically try to have that out by 6AM or 5:30 even and communicate it as rapidly as possible.”
St. George’s students had different opinions regarding the policy.
“The people that live in city limits have a longer and harder drive to school, which is a task for a young driver,” junior Will Courtney said. “There are a lot of precautions with ice on the road and young drivers. I think the school does a good job for the most part, but some days last year were for sure questionable.”
“It would be best to hear the news the night before instead of the in morning,” junior Susannah Smith said.
