Lost in Translation
A Georgia teen woke up from a three-day coma and started speaking fluent Spanish…for the first time in his life. The sixteen-year-old, Rueben Nsemoh, suffered a life-threatening head injury while playing soccer and was raced to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. When he woke up, his first words were “Tengo hambre,” or Spanish for “I am hungry.” Needless to say, his parents were more than a little surprised. He had heard the language from his Spanish-speaking brother and teammates, but he had never spoken the language himself. Experts say that this is a unique case of Foreign Accent Syndrome, which causes changes in accents or language after severe cases of Traumatic Brain Injury. After Nsemoh slowly recovered his English, his ability to speak Spanish faded. Despite the trauma, Nsemoh still aims to be a professional soccer player. Talk about dedication!
America & the Cyber Chase
Last Friday, a massive cyberattack shook the Internet, including popular sites such as Twitter, Etsy, Spotify, Vox, and Netflix. Sources say the attack was a DDOS attack specifically. DDOS attacks are attempts to flood a website with so much traffic that the site doesn’t work properly. The attack predominantly affected the American East Coast, causing a huge Internet outage. Because of the attack’s massive affect, it gained the attention of the FBI, who are now investigating the situation. Although no one has claimed responsibility, we do know that they are highly sophisticated in their craft and are likely to attack again.
Saving Antarctica (Finally)
A recently passed proposal has now made the Ross Sea in Antarctica the largest marine protected area. For the next 35 years, the Ross Sea will be off limits for commercial fishing. After years of negotiations, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, which contains delegates from 23 countries and the European Union, has agreed unanimously to pass this proposal. Due to the upwelling of nutrients from the deep sea, this area is incredibly important to the rest of the oceans’ ecosystems. Fishing and global warming has disrupted the natural ecosystem. Some conservationists argue that 35 years isn’t enough, but we’ll have to wait and see if this is just the beginning.
Wonder Woman to the Rescue?
The United Nations appointed Wonder Woman as an honorary ambassador for women’s empowerment. This year, many countries wanted a woman to be chosen as Secretary General to increase diversity within the UN, but instead, they chose António Gueterres. So, they made Wonder Woman a feminist ambassador in order to help empower women and girls. This is not the first cartoon character to be an ambassador for the UN: Winnie the Pooh, Tinker Bell and Angry Birds were all honorary ambassadors at one point. However, women’s advocates say that the Wonder Woman appointment is not nearly enough. According to the New York Times, nine out of ten senior leadership jobs went to men last year, so some women think the Wonder Woman appointment is the UN’s way of saying, “Sorry for the gender gap.” Nonetheless, expect a surge in Wonder Woman costumes this Halloween.
NFL Dropout
On Monday, Miami Dolphins running back, Arian Foster, announced that he was retiring from the NFL, effective immediately. While today Foster is one of the more well-known running backs in the league, he had a difficult time making his first NFL team. Foster was an undrafted player out of Tennessee when he landed a spot on the Houston Texans’ practice team in 2009. The next year was his breakout season, as he led the league in rushing yards and more. Foster has been plagued with a series of soft tissue injuries throughout his career, his most recent taking place in week two of the 2016-17 season. While Foster has managed to come back from all his injuries, he wrote in the letter that announced his retirement, “My body just can’t take the punishment this game asks for any longer.” Although Foster loved the game, he values his health more.
Election Wrap-Up
Since we last met, the world of politics has not slowed down. Clinton and Trump met again at the Al Smith charity dinner. Usually candidates’ speeches during the dinner are filled with light-hearted jabs, but we couldn’t help but feel the tension. This week, the world was awakened to the news that Trump’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star was destroyed overnight. While this isn’t huge news, it is still making headlines in the political news cycle, which indicates that we haven’t had much drama lately – one thing to be thankful for at least. Most national polls are still predicting Clinton to win with at least a four point lead. Stay tuned! When we come back next we will have a new president!
Heyy Batter Batter
The Chicago Cubs have reached the World Series for the first time in 71 years. They haven’t made it to the World Series since 1945, and they haven’t won the World Series since 1908, back when the Wright Brothers were inventing the airplane. So it’s been a while. They’re up against the Cleveland Indians, who haven’t won a World Series since 1948. Like the NBA Championship, the World Series is best-of-seven. Cleveland won Game 1, and Chicago won Game 2. The Cubs are expected to win because they won more games during the regular season, but don’t count the Indians out – they have home-field advantage. Either way, a historic losing streak (and maybe a curse or two) is about to be broken, so if you’re not a baseball fan, now’s the time to start watching.
Mini Model
If you’ve seen the pictures of adorable Asher Nash floating around on the Internet, you might be sad to find out the reason why. Asher is an inspiring, photogenic toddler model. He also has Down syndrome. Asher’s mom submitted photos of her son to an agency looking for models for OshKosh B’Gosh. They were told that they weren’t picked for the campaign because Asher’s photos weren’t even submitted by the agency. Their reason? The company wasn’t looking for children with disabilities. While he may not have gotten the modeling gig, the entire Internet is now cooing over him, so I guess that’s a win.
Timberlake’s Mistake
Memphians were overjoyed to see that one of their hometown treasures made a brief return to the city. Justin Timberlake came back to his hometown of Memphis to take advantage of early voting. To document his visit, Timberlake took a selfie at his ballot station, encouraging all his followers to make their voices heard and vote. While his intentions were pure, it was soon discovered that Timberlake broke Tennessee law. A few months ago, Governor Bill Haslam signed a bill that allows voters to use their phones for informational purposes only in the ballot station. The bill strictly forbids taking pictures or video in the ballot station – doing so would result in a maximum of 30 days in jail and/or a $50 fine. Luckily for JT, the Shelby County district attorney doesn’t plan to pursue the matter.
Pop Culture Announcement
Vine, the popular six-second video app, is saying, “Bye Bye Bye.” After Instagram released the ability to post videos on their app, Vine couldn’t keep up. Twitter, the owner of the app, decided to cut their losses by getting rid of the app. I guess a lot of Vine stars are going to have to find a new job…
