STAR Newsletter Issue 2: It’s always better when we’re together
News from September 5-16, 2016
From “Mother” to “Saint”You guessed it: Mother Teresa was just named a saint by the Catholic Church. In a ceremony with a crowd of about 120,000, Pope Francis declared her St. Teresa of Calcutta, in honor of her decades of work in the slums of Calcutta. Ordinarily, the process of declaring someone a saint begins five years after the candidate’s death, but Mother Teresa was so widely admired among the masses that her process began a mere 18 months after her death. But for those of you who can never remember full names, don’t worry! Pope Francis noted that it’s completely acceptable to continue calling her “Mother Teresa.” The Protest ContinuesWhile 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been the most prominent in the headlines for protesting the national anthem, he’s not alone.Players from the Tennessee Titans, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs were seen kneeling, locking arms or raising their fists during the national anthem. Kaepernick’s protest is also going beyond the NFL. U.S. women’s national team star, Megan Rapinoe has joined the protest, as she kneeled while the anthem was playing before her Seattle Reign FC game. Sports fans are still saying, “Now’s not the time,” and the athletes are asking, “Then when is?” Is It Too Late Now To Say, “Sorry?”A Canadian judge’s job is at stake for some controversial comments he made two years ago.In a rape case involving a nineteen-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted at a house party, Justice Robin Camp asked the victim “why [she] couldn’t just keep [her] knees together.” Then, he proceeded to make comments about women in general, saying that women typically “want to have sex, particularly if they’re drunk” and that “pain and sex sometimes go together.” After his comments caused furious reactions, the Canadian Judicial Council opened an investigation, as well as forcing him to issue a public apology and undergo sensitivity training. But wait, there’s more: Camp’s daughter was the victim of rape herself. Facepalm. Terrorist Plot Thwarted At Notre DameOn Sunday, French authorities charged a woman named Ornella G. for her involvement in planning an attack on the Notre Dame cathedral. The woman’s fingerprints were found in a car parked in front of Notre Dame that held multiple gas cylinders. In addition to arresting Ornella, French police arrested three other women who were connected to the plot. Minister Bernard Cazeneuve believes that these women were “radicalized” and were likely planning a violent attack on the cathedral. After the multiple tragedies France has already suffered, who could imagine the devastating effects this attack would’ve had? When Will This Madness End?North Carolina just can’t catch a break (although that might just be their fault). Just a few months ago, the NBA decided to move their annual All-Star game from Charlotte to New Orleans because of North Carolina’s refusal to get rid of a law that critics say discriminates against the LGBT community. This past Monday, the NCAA took a similar route and decided to move the March Madness games that would’ve been hosted in Greensboro elsewhere. How long will this stalemate last? Nobody knows. Fight to the FinishIn the latest election update, Hillary Clinton has the support of 46% of voters, while Trump has the support of 44% of voters, according to CNN Poll of Polls. What this means is that voters who are unsure about who to vote for in this election are not alone – America is right there with them. The poll finds that both Trump and Clinton have been struggling to win over their parties. While most forecasting models show Clinton winning the election, Trump narrowed Clinton’s margin by two points in recent weeks, so this election is still anyone’s game. Wrong Child, Wrong FlightA mother paid JetBlue Airlines to have her five-year-old escorted on his flight to New York, where she was waiting. Imagine her surprise when she was presented with another young boy at the JFK airport instead of her son. Apparently, JetBlue had a mix-up, and ended up sending her son over 200 miles away, to Boston. After they realized their mistake, JetBlue quickly sent the boys to their correct locations, but the damage had already been done. JetBlue said, “Oops” and is investigating the mix-up. We’re thinking those families won’t be flying with JetBlue anytime soon. Confederate ControversyCarlos Moore, a Mississippi attorney, recently went to court claiming that the Confederate flag was unconstitutional. Judge Carlton W. Reeves, who was the appointed judge for the case, believes the flag symbolizes “the Mississippi of slavery, lynchings, pain and white supremacy.” While he shared Moore’s sentiment about the Confederate flag, he had to dismiss the case because Moore did not have legal right to be in court because he had no “cognizable legal injury,” or visible proof, that could make his case legitimate. Although Moore’s attempt to make a change failed, that doesn’t mean that change is impossible. Judge Reeves believes that another case could come up or the people could come together to change the flag. Pop Culture AnnouncementAnd in the latest episode of “Americans Will Eat Anything,”Burger King just came out with Cheetos Chicken Fries. Yikes. But we kinda want to try them. Double yikes. |
