Beale Street Music Festival lineup met with mixed reactions

The lineup for the 2016 Beale Street Music Festival was released early Wednesday morning via its website and social media. BSMF, or Music Fest as it is more commonly known, will take place on Friday, April 29, through Sunday, May 1, at Tom Lee Park in downtown Memphis.

Headliners for Music Fest include Neil Young, Weezer and Train on Friday, Meghan Trainor, Modest Mouse and Jason Derulo on Saturday, and Beck, Paul Simon and Zedd on Sunday. Other acts include Panic! at the Disco, Young the Giant, Barenaked Ladies, Moon Taxi, Cold War Kids and Bastille.

On November 30, 2015, the Choose 901 website launched a poll asking voters for their top 20 picks for Music Fest. J Cole, Wiz Khalifa, MGMT, Walk the Moon and Skrillex were among the top 12, yet none of the highly-anticipated performers made it from the leaked lineup to the actual one.

A lack of the anticipated artists combined with the artists who do make up the real lineup evoked mixed reactions in the upper school student body, with many expressing disappointment.

“I think everyone’s disappointed that another huge artist like Ed Sheeran isn’t coming again,” junior Anna Darty said. “I feel like last year was so good that nothing they could release would be as good, like G-Eazy, Ed Sheeran [and] Hozier. I mean, you can’t beat that.”

“[I’m] disappointed. There’s some good music and I’m excited to enjoy it with my friends, don’t get me wrong, but my expectations were so high from last year,” senior Sophia Quesada said. “I expected bigger and better and got less than.”

“I was a little disappointed because there was a list out that was fake but it got my hopes up,” junior Alex Middleton said. “I’m still excited for it though.”

The full lineup is available on the official Beale Street Music Festival website, MemphisInMay.org. Let us know which artist you are most excited to see or how you feel about the lineup in the comments!
