St. George’s Fall sports have begun, and the Gryphon community has shown up strong in support of the Volleyball, Cheer, Cross Country, Soccer, and Football teams. Here is a glimpse into what is happening in the Gryphon sports community this fall:
Volleyball
Junior Kym Young reaches to send the ball back over the net. According to senior Annika Thompson, the Netgryphs are undefeated heading into regional play with their eyes on a state title. “There is more urgency behind this year… we want to make it the best one yet,” Thompson says, “the Netgryphs have always been a strong team and family”. Cross Country
Senior Graham Gumbert looks to finish strong as the finish line comes into view. “It [the season] has been going pretty well so far. We have a very young team this year, so I didn’t really know where we’d stack up this year going into it,” Gumbert said. “But I’ve seen how we’ve improved over the season, and I’ve been honestly pretty astonished with it all. Soccer
Senior Boo McWaters passes a ball to her teammates during a Lady Gryphons win over Harding. “The season is going pretty well,” remarked McWaters. “We had a bit of a rocky middle (of the season), but we see to be back on track now. The team is so great and supportive of one another”. The Lady Gryphons currently have the number one seed in their side of the division in the tournament....
Cheer
The Gryphon cheer team performs in the St. George’s gymnasium. “This season is going well,” says senior Mary Locke Bryan. “We are having a lot of fun getting to know each other and experiencing games together… I think the team gets along really well. This is key because cheerleading is such a team sport, so it is important for everyone to get along, trust each other, and support each other.�...
Football
Senior Nick Seward looks for a receiver as the Kirby defense closes in on St. George’s during the homecoming game. “I think we’re not doing as well as we had hoped, but we’re definitely working to improve that and get better by the day… our determination to work and get better at every practice has been good,'' Seward said.
