Evan’s Guide to All Things NFL – Recapping Week 10
Evan Dorian, Co-Editor-in-Chief
After Week 10 of the NFL season, I’m back to my column after an absence. I’ve got plenty to say as the NFL playoff picture and top teams take shape, and at this point in the season, it’s looking more and more certain which teams are contenders and which teams are already looking ahead to the draft.
#1: New Orleans Saints (8-1)
Face it – the Saints are now unquestionably the best team in the NFL. They’re winners of eight straight games, they’ve only scored less than 30 points twice all season and their defense is beginning to look like its last-year self. They’ve beaten one good team after another and they’ve clearly recovered from their Week 1 shootout loss to the Buccaneers. The Saints simply have the most tal...
#2: Kansas City Chiefs (9-1)
It’s safe to say that the Chiefs have rebounded from their loss to the Patriots – a game they have a very good chance to win in the first place – and they’re ready to continue their reign of dominance over the AFC. Patrick Mahomes is just as strong an MVP contender as he has been all season, and the Kansas City defense is starting to be able to stand up to opposing offenses. The Chiefs are a no-b...
#3: Los Angeles Rams (9-1)
It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Rams – they suffered their first loss of the season to the Saints in Week 9, and then tragedy struck the Los Angeles community after a shooting and a deadly wildfire that has burned close enough to the Rams’ practice facilities to affect their weekly schedule. On the field, they’ve suffered setbacks as well, with Cooper Kupp tearing his ACL. Ultimatel...
#4: Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2-1)
The surging Steelers continued their tear on Thursday night, routing the Panthers 52-21. This team is absolutely unstoppable after a relatively slow start to the season. Not only is James Conner filling in excellently for Le’Veon Bell, his stats suggest that he’s perhaps even better. As a biased fantasy owner of Conner, my praise for him might carry slightly less weight, but NFL fans have to re...
#5: New England Patriots (7-3)
It’s not often that a team suffers an ugly loss and retains its top-five standing, but we all know that no matter the unimpressive performance of the Patriots on any given week, they’re still one of the league’s best. Their 24-point loss to the Titans serves to reflect well on the Titans more than it reflects poorly on the Patriots. The Pats’ next month of games alternates between cakewalks an...
#6: Chicago Bears (6-3)
After slumping recently, the NFL world wasn’t sure if the much-improved Bears were truly worthy of top-ten ranking on a regular basis. But after three wins in a row, Mitch Trubisky and Co. are right back on top of the NFC North and poised for a playoff run. Memphis favorite Anthony Miller made a splash in Week 10, catching five passes for 122 yards and a touchdown against the Lions. The Bears ar...
#7: Houston Texans (6-3)
During their bye week, the Texans weren’t able to extend their win streak, but they figure to pick up right where they left off as they take on the Redskins in a game that will boost the winning team to another top-ten ranking next week. The Texans’ upcoming schedule features some great chances to beat good opponents, as a win over the Redskins would prove they’re a truly solid team. If they fol...
#8: Los Angeles Chargers (7-2)
The Chargers’ 7-2 record is good, of course, but their strength of schedule is one of the NFL’s worst. Their best win was a close one in London against the Titans. And it doesn’t get better – their only marquee matchups for the rest of the season include the Steelers in Week 13 and the Chiefs in Week 15. Unfortunately for the Chargers, neither of those teams look vulnerable enough to be be...
#9: Washington Redskins (6-3)
One of the biggest surprises of the season picked up another win this past week, albeit against the flailing Buccaneers, and NFL fans are getting used to the reality that in a surprisingly boring and uncompetitive division in the NFC East, the Redskins are the team to beat. Aside from Adrian Peterson’s electrifying rushing ability despite his age, the Redskins’ offense is as boring as they come, but ...
#10: Carolina Panthers (6-3)
The Panthers are lucky not to fall out of the top ten after suffering a truly embarrassing loss on Thursday to the Steelers. Hard to believe as this may be, I think it’s reasonable to attribute the huge margin of defeat to the Steelers’ dominance more than the Panthers’ ineptitude. Christian McCaffrey looked like an elite running back all game, and Cam Newton’s play could have been a lot wors...
#11-21
Here's how #11-21 shook out after Week 10: 11. Minnesota Vikings (5-3-1) – After a poor start to the season, the Vikings have rebounded enough to still have a good shot to make the playoffs. 12. Tennessee Titans (5-4) – The Titans have been a roller coaster all season, but looked steadily good all game against the Patriots on Sunday. 13. Indianapolis Colts (4-5) – The Colts have w...
#22-32
Here's how #22-32 shook out after Week 10: 22. Miami Dolphins (5-5) – It’s at this point in the rankings when we must begin discussing the most boring, least relevant teams, and the Dolphins have been the epitome of boring and irrelevant this season. 23. Denver Broncos (3-6) – In a season full of surprises from the Broncos, from Phillip Lindsay’s emergence to Case Keenum’s unstable play, th...
