Just up the river

The River Art Festival supports Memphis’ art scene

The River Arts Festival was unveiled this past weekend on South Main Street.

Like the past 10 festivals, artists from all around the nation brought their art to be displayed – and hopefully bought – on Main Street.

Since its conception, the festival’s mission has been to “cultivate, promote, encourage and develop public appreciation and support of the visual and performing arts for the benefit, education and enjoyment of the citizens of Memphis and the surrounding communities in the Mid-South,” according to their website.

Several members of the St. George’s community went to the festival, including biology teacher Mr. Sam Abrams.

“I walked through [the festival] on my way home,” Mr. Abrams said. “I didn’t really look at much of the art though because I can’t afford it.”

Many of the pieces were several hundred dollars, but the prices also exceeded one thousand dollars, depending on the artist, medium and technique used.

RiverArtsFest was not just an art show. The festival also offered interactive art stations for all children in attendance.

According to their website, “RiverArtsFest invites children of all ages to participate in a free interactive art station.” The activities are free and children of all ages are able to participate.

If you missed this year’s festival, save the date for the next festival October 27-29, 2017.
