Murphy (left) poses with her cousin Griffin Gearhardt. Both girls committed to Vanderbilt to play lacrosse.

Sophomore Kate Murphy committed to play Division 1 lacrosse at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. this past August.

Vanderbilt’s close proximity to home and tradition of  academic excellence played a major role in her decision.

“I ended up choosing Vanderbilt because I wanted to play lacrosse at a high academic school,” Murphy said. “Also, it was closer to home.”

When she is not playing Lacrosse for St. George’s, Murphy plays competitive lacrosse for Sky Walkers Lacrosse in Baltimore Md..

Although being one of the only people from out of town on a team in Baltimore is not easy, Murphy is thankful for all the support she has been given.

“My parents helped me to keep my confidence up and pushed me to be better,” Murphy said. “I also have the most supportive teammates and coaches that motivated me more than anything.”

Murphy plays wall ball, shoots on goal and passes with her sister, junior Claire Murphy, to keep her skills sharp during the offseason.

Murphy also considered Yale University, Virginia Tech and James Madison University.
